How long does the SEO process take?

SEO optimization

When you think about the results you expect from your website’s SEO, you need to consider three key criteria that will help you measure them: competition, internal links and content.

The question of how long optimization takes and when you will see results can be very frustrating if you are looking for a definitive, highly precise answer.

Because, beyond all the variables involved in this process that you need to analyze, you will also have to do so in the context of the optimization your direct competitors are doing. And that simply turns an already extremely complex task into an infinitely more complicated one.

To make this process easier, it is best to use the three variables above to work out how long SEO will take. Even so, despite the measurable data behind them, there is still no single formula that will give you a definitive answer.

And since we mentioned measurable data, we should also say that it is the starting point for this kind of analysis. Only after you evaluate the data behind these three variables can you get to work on estimating roughly how long optimization will take and form an idea of its results.

Let’s take them one at a time:

What role does competition play in estimating how long SEO will take?

There are areas where competition is low, but wherever products or services of real interest to people are sold, the level of competition will be directly proportional to that interest. In other words, it depends directly on demand.

And, as you can probably already imagine, the more competitive the companies you have to fight against, the longer it will take to reach the top positions in Google search results.

Climbing the search rankings usually follows the same pattern: if you start from a very low position, the climb can be fast at first, but as you get closer to the top positions, each step up takes more and more effort and time. Obviously because of the fierce competition, but also because the top positions in Google’s rankings are backed by solid SEO services.

An often overlooked aspect of competition is the link between how much competition there is in a niche and how skilled the SEO professionals are behind the top web pages in that niche.

Competition always has the same effect: it pushes companies to make the most competitive offers possible and to capture as large a share of the market as they can to stay profitable. It is easy to see, however, that this usually favors large companies, with large profits and, by extension, high-performing SEO services.

It goes without saying that if you have to compete against such giants, the battle will be quite hard to fight.

To start with, you need to analyze everything about your direct competitors who use professional SEO services, not only their current situation but, above all, the progress that brought them to the positions they hold today.

That is the starting point. And, very importantly, all the effort is justified, because when you want to outrank your competition, your effort has to be greater than theirs.

Links have played, and still play, a huge role in SEO.

But their impact depends on several factors, including the number of links, because a larger number of links helps you succeed faster.

Roughly speaking, a few quality links from relevant websites will have a much bigger impact than many low-quality links.

But remember that quality links are much harder to get, though they have the major advantage of lasting longer than those obtained automatically.

The speed at which you gain links also matters, because growth that is much faster than the usual pace usually signals an unnatural attempt to manipulate rankings. Plus, if you use methods that don’t follow Google’s guidelines, you risk penalties.

So, in general, the faster you earn quality links, the faster you will climb the rankings, as long as you keep a few things in mind:

  • the speed at which you earn links: it should grow at a fairly steady pace
  • following Google’s guidelines: this ensures natural growth
  • using “black hat” tactics will reveal unnatural patterns that can hurt your progress

Content also plays an important role in how quickly you make progress.

Content quality matters a great deal for achieving the growth you want. And quality does not depend directly on an article’s word count.

In fact, there is no ideal article length: an article simply needs to be as long as necessary to solve the problem of the visitor it is written for. As long as the article delivers what the title promises, it is perfect, regardless of how many words it took to write it.

There is also a mistaken belief that you should not publish articles too quickly, because otherwise Google will see the large amount of new content as unnatural and sabotage your progress.

People still tend to believe this myth, but Google officially debunked it long ago. If you have new, relevant, quality content ready, there is absolutely no reason not to use it right away in your SEO campaign. The sooner you publish it, the sooner it will have an impact.

The best advice is to keep a regular publishing schedule. For two reasons:

  • content published regularly will be crawled by Google more often, which speeds up SEO
  • it encourages users to visit your page more often, which Google will read as a signal of positive user experiences, which, again, will speed up your climb in the rankings

Deleting content can also contribute to the progress of an SEO campaign. That is why you need to clearly distinguish between the types of content that really help you and those that don’t.

The key to making this distinction correctly lies in how original and useful the article is. Longer, quality articles seem to attract more links than short ones of questionable quality.

Conclusion

Beyond the technical side, an important part of an SEO specialist’s job is managing client expectations. And quite often, despite their solid knowledge, many SEO specialists get stuck on this point.

Because, most of the time, clients have only been told what they wanted to hear, many of them now have unrealistic expectations and expect results to appear within just a few weeks.

But this only holds true when competition is low. With moderate competition it can take months, and when competition is fierce, the campaign’s effects may only show after a year or more.

Every client needs to be prepared to invest anywhere from a few months to a full year before results appear. In fact, according to the most comprehensive statistics, only 5.7% of new pages reach the top 10 positions within a year. And even if you reach that position, your spot is not guaranteed forever. Your competitors are also working non-stop on counterattack strategies.

In other words, the effort does not end once you win the position you wanted: it has to continue to maintain what you have gained.

You will never be able to predict exactly how long it will take for an SEO campaign to show results, but you can get a good idea by analyzing these parameters, and over time it will become easier to estimate what to expect and how long it may take to reach the results you want.
